Show Notes from the 4/7/14 Breaking Free Show
Guest: Alexandra Bloch
Alexandra Bloch is a representational artist who discovered her talent and passion for painting, drawing, and design while still a child. She creates realistic and naturalistic images of figures and forms existing in everyday life. Her primary inspiration is the human figure and paints nudes. How do you feel about nudity as an art form? To watch the show in its entirety, click here: http://lnkd.in/K2Hsta.

The following questions, answers and themes evolved during the show:
Marilyn spoke about what it was like to post Alexandra’s images on Facebook, wondering what, if any, consequences there would be in posting nudity. She said, “I wondered what my friends and family would say. I wondered what would happen on Facebook. Would they tell me to take the images down? Well, it’s their domain so if I play in their domain then I have to play by their rules.”
Update: So far, Marilyn has not been asked to remove them.
Alexandra spoke about her art and how it is an expression of the human body with so many possibilities of light and shading. It’s not an attached view and it’s not a sexual view. I want to show the beauty of nature through the lines and curves and I do that using the human body. I want people to be at peace when they view my paintings and I want my paintings to be simple. Sometimes I paint the entire body. Other times I paint one thing where the emphasis is coming through the emotion. Gesture is a pose. It’s their body language. You can sense what they are feeling/thinking.
What is a person thinking who commissions you to paint them?
I haven’t had many. I had an idea and wanted to do it.
Male and Female Reactions:
Suziani, a fellow artist, painter of nudes and audience member commented, “Men comment on the nudes! The women will comment on every other painting in my apartment, but not the nudes.”
Suziani continued, “We (Alexandra and I) paint for the same reason. I can’t not paint. It is the way that it is comforting. I get lost in it. Her paintings are superb!…I wish people were more matter of fact about their body. It comes in many shapes and sizes. It just is. I wish there wasn’t as much emphasis on what the body looks like. We are big critics of ourselves.”
Alexandra’s advice for new painters/artists: 1) Forget anything you think you know about the human form! 2) Focus on the model in front of you. 3) Always look at nature. Let nature be your guide to do a good drawing. 4) Learn how to see and 5) Look at it for as long as you can.
