Hi there, folks. This week’s catch word is perception. As the saying goes, “You get what you focus on.” And sometimes, you think you’ve got it all figured out and then there’s a juicy, wonderful surprise. A very big welcome surprise.
The other day, I came across a video taken during a concert provided by singer Michael Buble. During the 2010 concert, a young man’s mother haggled Mr. Buble on stage, wanting to tell him about her 15 year old son, Sam, was eager to sing onstage with the famous singer. Mr. Buble, obviously humoring her, relents and invites Sam onstage. Buble begins the song, then hands it off to Sam who easily takes over and belts out the words with a clear, strong voice. Mr. Buble clearly doesn’t expect this; he is visibly stunned and overjoyed and the result is a jaw-dropping duet met with hearty and emotional applause from the audience. Buble jumps up. His body comes alive. So does his face. His reaction shows that he is quite utterly and joyfully shocked.
Virtually every person in the room that night is surprised. All but one person. It’s clear from the video that the only person who did see it coming all along is Sam’s mother. What a freeing moment for both of the men…a popular singer and one just beginning his journey. They sat close to each other for a time and simply enjoyed the music together.
One person aligned the situation: Sam’s mom. She perceived the depth of her son’s gift, his desire to share it and his ability to realize his dream. She perceived an opportunity the night of the concert. She moved past any fears that she did have and listened to love. She perceived it all…and then she acted.
The “Breaking Free” Videocast welcomes and celebrates stories like this each week. Tell us a story about a time that you were surprised by something you perceived to be true. We can’t wait to listen to the music that you’re making.
Note: There is some profanity in this video.
